On December 20th, 2023, the Jiaxing British Columbia Offshore School held its English Song Contest, featuring a diverse group of contestants who presented a celebration of music. Here, we reflect on the performances that rocked the stage that day.
Anna and Annie, both from grade 10, performed ‘A Lifelong Journey’. The song expresses the twists and turns of life. Annie’s powerful voice impresses with its soaring high notes. The songs are warm and romantic. Following them, Amy, Yolanda, and Jessy, also from grade 10, performed ‘Light-Chaser‘. The girls’ voices blend beautifully, conveying love and unwavering commitment.
Ariana and Lily, both in grade 12, performed ‘Wonderful U’. The song conveys the idea that love can be hindered by reality, preventing two people who love each other from being together. The gentle voices of them instantly moved the audience. The song vividly expresses the depth and charm of love, interpreting the beauty and touching aspects of love.
During the competition, Elliot, a Grade 11 student, performed a sensational rendition of the Italian song ‘Caro Mio Bianco’, which expresses fidelity to love. Elliot skillfully used her technique to make the song penetrating and insightful, conveying the message that love has its own destiny and people never get burned out over their feelings.
Finally, Mr. Vincent’s surprise performance caught our attention. He played guitar, and harmonica, and sang ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’. His voice was captivating and drew us into the music. Although he occasionally spoke in Mandarin, it added to the overall enjoyment of the performance. In the end, the entire audience stood up and applauded this multi-talented teacher who instructs in Socials, English and French.
The English song contest was enjoyable, and all participants performed well. The songs performed are timeless classics that have resonated with audiences throughout history.
