On April 6, a group show called the “Song Analysis Presentation” was held in a Grade 10 class at Jiaxing Senior High School BCOS. With the organization of our oral English teacher, Mrs. Wynnychuck, the activities of the Song Analysis Presentation were carried out in an orderly manner. Basically, the students needed to sing songs, look for literary devices in the songs, and explain them thoroughly.

Students got into groups of 4. During the Qingming festival, students divided the work reasonably and actively discussed their analysis project. Each of the groups had to prepare an 8-minute presentation where they talked about at least four different lines in a song to exemplify the usage of the literary devices in that song.

The order of speakers was decided by a random draw, which was very exciting. After the warm applause, the first group of students stepped to the front of the class, and with a strong sense of rhythm began to rap. The unique tones, exaggerated pronunciation, and the enthusiasm of the singers deeply affected every student in the room.

Half of the students completed the song analysis presentation in the first block, while the rest of students gave a speech in the second block. The second group of students did not have much time to prepare, but they performed as well as the ones who had performed in the first block. As the saying goes, one minute on stage takes ten years of practice. It was their tacit cooperation and active rehearsal that brought us such enjoyment.

The groups’ presentations ended with the last affectionate English song “My Love”. This show let the teachers and students see the brightness within themselves. The students who usually did not speak much in class also took advantage of this opportunity to show their excellent oral expression skills.

This oral activity at Jiaxing senior high school, with the teacher’s carefully planned activities and detailed explanations, made the seemingly boring English learning unexpectedly interesting. This Song Analysis Presentation was so eye-catching that it made the students feel the rhythmic beauty of the songs and appreciate the diversified teaching style. This way of learning is not monotonous, but rather easier to enjoy. After the presentation, many students were looking forward to the next oral English activity. The students were very happy to have this opportunity to show themselves and acquire a new understanding of oral English skills.
